The article examines the growing importance of special operations forces in the United States. This process has been driven by factors related to the nature of the threat and to social, political and economic constraints. The innovation process has not only resulted in increased human and material resources, but in profound changes in doctrinal and organizational character. The success of these units in the US military has driven a process of military diffusion to other NATO countries, which are also enhancing its special operations forces. © UNISCI, 2015.
