This study is aimed at addressing one of the main causes of conflicts in adolescent couples, jealousy. The importance of this study lies in the fact that most of the research devoted to jealousy is approached from psychology as a form of pathological manifestation typical of interpersonal relationships, leaving aside other disciplines such as Sociology. This study has from sociology a proposal to understand the dynamics of jealousy as a social norm in high school students in the city of Temuco, Chile. The research is a qualitative exploratory study in which 12 Mixed Discussion Groups were made to students between 15 and 19 years old from 6 secondary education institutions. Among the main results are that the presence of jealousy in affective relationships is mainly due to the fact that there is a social normalization that is related to a need to show affection. © 2019 Hipatia Editorial.
