In Chile, most dropouts are from the lowest income levels. The phenomenon can be explained as the result of various factors. The current document presents qualitative research aimed at determining if the family setting has more influence than the economic factor in motivating dropouts from ages 14 to 17, enrolled in schools in two communes in the region of Araucanía in Chile. The outstanding causes that influence dropping out include those related to the family setting, such as family problems and the economic precariousness of the home. One of the most decisive causes is related to the lack of support from the adults who are responsible for young people's education: en emerging topic detected by several protagonists in the educational sphere.
