Women in the Colonial Maule: Assets Administrators in the XVII and the early XVIII Century

Abstract

This study analyzes the active participation of women in the administration of estates in colonial Chile, spe-cifically in the Maule region. Through an examination of historical documents, the evolution of the female role is evidenced from a position limited by norms towards significant participation in the colonial economy and society. Women, traditionally relegated to passive roles, emerge as key agents in the management of family wealth and social dynamics, challenging the conventional narratives of their time. Despite legal and social barriers, women found ways to actively engage in the economy and society, playing crucial roles in shaping and maintaining family patrimony. Through the management of wills, donations, sales, and the negotiation of dowries, they left an indelible mark on the colonial social and economic structure. This study highlights the importance of reevaluating traditional perceptions of gender roles in history, recognizing the significant contribution of women in the construction of Chilean colonial society. In doing so, it honors the memory of those who fought for their place and voice, enriching historical understanding with a more inclu-sive and equitable perspective. © 2024, Ediciones Clio.
